History
In the winter of 2021, the Montage Big Sky Resort opened. Located in the Spanish Peaks area of Big Sky, Montana, this new luxury resort is less than an hour away from Yellowstone National Park. The resort features ski-in, ski-out access, Nordic skiing, and snowshoe trails. They are also home to an 18-hole golf course as well as fly fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. The resort has 150 rooms and suites as well as 39 residences on site. The resort is also linked to an adjacent lodge, offering amenities such as billiards, a restaurant, a spa, and a shopping area.
The Montage Big Sky is the first five-star luxury resort in the state of Montana. The resort sits on 3,500 acres of wilderness and was estimated to cost over $400 million to build. The structural design of the building consisted of 5 levels of steel frame construction, over 2 levels of concrete on a metal deck, with steel framing, and is situated within a high-risk seismic zone. After breaking ground in early 2021, the project was completed in late 2022, although the doors opened in late 2021. It has since become a prime destination for tourists from all over the country.
Portland Bolt’s Contribution
In the fall of 2021, Portland Bolt was given the opportunity to supply the anchor bolt requirement for the construction of the Montage Big Sky Resort. The anchor bolts differed in configuration, covering fully threaded epoxy anchors as well as anchor rods with threads on each end. The size of the anchor rods ranged from ¾” to 1½” in diameter and the lengths were anywhere from 18” to 48”. In total, the weight of the anchor bolt package exceeded 10,500 lbs. The grade of the anchor bolts needed differed as well. The fully threaded epoxy anchors were primarily ASTM F1554 Grade 36 whereas the larger sized anchor rods were a high strength ASTM F1554 Grade 105. The larger anchor rods utilized a square plate on the embedded end to create an additional bearing surface, increasing pull-out strength. With the capability to perform all of the necessary operations in-house, Portland Bolt was successful in manufacturing and delivering the complete anchor bolt package to arrive on-site in time to keep the project on schedule.
