In early 2019, construction began on the expansion of the North Hawaii Community Hospital facilities. Specifically, the expansion focused on their Primary Care Clinic, Specialty Clinic, and an expanded emergency room. The Primary Care Clinic was budgeted at approximately $2 million and was scheduled to be completed in January 2020. The expansion of this clinic consisted of going from seven exam rooms to sixteen. The Specialty Clinic is a $2.5 million facility with six examination rooms, a casting room, and an X-ray room. The hospital’s orthopedic program will also move to the Specialty Clinic since they use the X-rays regularly. In total, the expansion would cost approximately $25 million, increasing the hospital space from 3,500 to over 12,000 square feet. The project was completed towards the end of the first quarter of 2020.
In the fall of 2018, Portland Bolt was contacted by the steel fabricator working on this project to supply the anchor bolt requirement. The anchor bolts required were ASTM F1554 Grade 36 and were specified as a forged headed anchor bolt. They were also hot-dip galvanized per ASTM F2329. This was a perfect fit for Portland Bolt with our ability to forge headed bolts, as well as hot-dip galvanize in house.
Following the production of the anchor bolts, the fabricator again contacted Portland Bolt as a source for the tie rod assemblies needed. Tie rod assemblies typically consist of rods with threads on each end, clevises for the outer ends which normally attach to some type of plate, and an optional turnbuckle in the middle. For this particular application, a turnbuckle was used. The tie rods on this job were approximately 40 feet in length measured from one clevis end to the other and required custom wooden pallet crates for shipping. With Portland Bolt handling the entire production requirement in house combined with our ideal location on the west coast, we were able to get these shipped to the job site in time to keep the project on schedule.
