Educational Website Covering Anchor Bolts with Forged Heads

Headed Anchor Bolt Microsite | Portland Bolt

Anchor bolts are intended for anchoring structural supports to concrete foundations. Such structural supports include building columns, column supports for highway signs, street lighting and traffic signals, steel bearing plates, and similar applications.

Our newest website, www.headedanchorbolts.com, contains technical information related to hex, heavy hex, and square head anchor bolts. When using headed anchor bolts, the headed end is embedded in the foundation, while the threaded end projects from the concrete.

Engineers are specifying headed anchor bolts much more frequently than in the past, and this microsite explores our hot-forging capabilities as well as the benefits of headed anchor bolts compared to rods with welded nuts or bent anchor bolts.

Technical Information

Learn why a headed anchor bolt is not the same as a threaded rod with a welded nut and why they should never be substituted for a bolt with a forged head without engineer’s approval.

CHIME Telescope – Pathfinder

Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, or CHIME, is a partnership between the University of British Columbia, McGill University, The University of Toronto, and the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. The CHIME project uses radio waves and a telescope to conduct dark energy experiments at the observatory in Penticton, BC.

CHIME Telescope - Pathfinder | Portland Bolt

In the winter of 2013, the project began its prototype phase known as Pathfinder. This portion of the job required nearly (300) 5/8” diameter x 12” long hot-dip galvanized F1554 Grade 36 bent anchor bolts to fasten the cylindrical reflectors to the concrete foundation. Read more.

Through November 17th, 2014, we have shipped 199 orders year-to-date for projects in various parts of Canada. Learn more about our participation in Canadian projects.

AASHTO Specifications | Portland BoltAs it relates to bolts, often times, fasteners and other materials will be shown on plans for state transportation projects as having an AASHTO designation. These AASHTO numbers typically will correlate directly to a particular ASTM specification, with the verbiage actually coming directly from the associated ASTM designation.

Common AASHTO specifications and their corresponding ASTM equivalent grades are as follows:
