How is a Square Machine Bolt Made?

Square machine bolts, also referred to as crossarm bolts, square head machine bolts, or simply machine bolts, are the most commonly used bolts in wood pole overhead line construction. These bolts typically fasten wooden crossarms to utility poles.

There are dozens of products in the pole line industry, such as insulators, grounding products, and deadline hardware., which Portland Bolt does not provide. Instead, we choose to focus on the specialized bolts and fasteners involved in the pole line industry.

There is pole line-specific technical information to be found on our specialty website www.polelinefasteners.com. Want to see how a square machine bolt is manufactured and galvanized? Let our resident pole line fastener expert, Anthony Porreco, walk you through a step by step video of how we do it!

Bishop Road Bridge

In January of 2013, Portland Bolt supplied shear plates, split rings, long (138″) galvanized threaded rods, hex bolts, lag screws, and lock nuts for the Bishop Road Bridge project in Portneuf, Quebec. Our 85,000 square foot manufacturing facility complete with hot-dip galvanizing line has the capability to ship custom fasteners to eastern Canada quickly and competitively. Read more.

How often does Portland Bolt ship to Canada? In 2012, we shipped 268 orders to Canada, and in 2011, we shipped 271 orders. Given that there were 251 business days in each of those years, Portland Bolt ships more than an order per day to Canada. Check out our interactive Shipment Destination Map to see exactly where our bolts end up.

Anchor Bolt Fixes

Common anchor bolt problems often faced by contractors in the field include anchor bolts that are installed either too high or too low or anchor bolts that are damaged once they have been poured into a foundation. AISC Design Guide 1 addresses both issues, which our technical expert, Dane McKinnon has summarized in the FAQ area of our website. In our July 2013 Newsletter, we will address misaligned anchor bolts. For answers to these and other common fastener-related questions, visit our FAQ section frequently or subscribe to our RSS feed, as we are constantly adding to the current database of over 130 entries.

Timber Connectors

Portland Bolt brand shear plates, split rings, and installation tools have arrived!
Two integral components of the Bishop Road Bridge project highlighted above were shear plates and split rings (pictured above). Collectively referred to as “timber connectors,” these products help to reinforce wood structures. Talk to John Wunderlich, who maintains our specialty website, www.shearplates.com, for more information about various timber connectors used in wood construction, or visit the Timber Construction and Glulam page of the Industries Served section of our website for more information about timber connectors and other fasteners used in timber construction.
