The first step in the manufacturing process of any fastener, regardless of its final configuration, is cutting the bolt to length. Raw material in the form of steel round bar ranging from 12′ to 40′ in length is either saw cut or sheared.

Band saws use saw blades to cut through the steel, while shears function like a guillotine, chopping the raw material. Answer: Construction fasteners are extremely technical and there are several pieces of information we need to make sure your bolt order is quoted and manufactured correctly. This FAQ provides insight as to all of the necessary information we need to ensure you receive the correct bolts for your project.

Here is the information we need:

  8. Domestic Requirements
  9. Delivery Requirements

Consider “calling out” the information according to this example:

“Please provide a quote for 100 pieces of a domestic ¾” diameter X 30” long galvanized ASTM A307 grade A hex bolt with 4” of thread. Include one (1) nut and (1) washer per bolt. Quote the materials FOB Los Angeles, California and deliver them no later than 3 weeks from the time of order placement. Certification is required and pricing is needed by the end of the day.”

Big Stone Plant – AQCS

Big Stone City, South Dakota

In April, 2013, construction began on a $405 million air-quality control system (AQCS) retrofit at Big Stone Plant near Big Stone City, South Dakota. Otter Tail Power Company, NorthWestern Energy, and Montana-Dakota Utilities co-own the plant. The project, which is scheduled for completion in 2016, will reduce nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and mercury emissions from the plant by 80% – 90%.

Portland Bolt manufactured over 40,000 pounds of anchor rods for this project, ranging from 1/2″ through 4″ diameter. The anchor rods and plates were hot-dip galvanized, an operation performed in our 85,000 square foot manufacturing facility.
