Big Stone Plant

Portland Bolt was chosen to supply anchor bolts for a $405 million air-quality control system (AQCS) retrofit at Big Stone Plant near Big Stone City, South Dakota. Otter Tail Power Company, NorthWestern Energy, and Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., co-own the plant. Construction began in April 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016. The project will reduce nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and mercury emissions from the plant by 80 percent to 90 percent, meeting EPA timelines for Regional Haze compliance and Mercury and Air Toxics Standards.

Portland Bolt manufactured a wide array of anchor rods for the project, ranging from 1/2” diameter up to 4” diameter. Portland Bolt also supplied many anchor plates for the job. All of the anchor bolts were hot-dip galvanized, a function we perform in our facility.

The anchor bolts were manufactured and shipped in several releases as needed. The time-sensitive nature of the project made it critical that the anchor bolts arrived on a strict schedule. Even though the job was located more than 1,500 miles from our manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon, project owners trusted us to get the material to the jobsite correctly and on time.
