Scorpion Pier

Over 55,000 people come ashore each year at the Scorpion Pier on Santa Cruz Island located within the Channel Islands National Park. Due to the heavy tourist activity, the National Park Service determined a new pier should be built and the existing pier decommissioned. The existing pier was too shallow, provided difficult vessel navigation and mooring during moderate wind and wave conditions, challenging access for ferries, was inefficient for cargo circulation, required frequent maintenance, and was nearing the end of its lifespan.

The awarded general contractor reached out to Portland Bolt in the summer of 2020 to obtain a quote for the fastener package. In October 2020, Portland Bolt shipped over 7,500 domestic galvanized hex lag screws for the project. Funding provided by the National Park Service required all steel components installed on the pier to be melted and manufactured in the USA. Due to the remote job site location, the contractor operated crew shifts requiring personnel to camp out on the island for days at a time.

Portland Bolt produces lag screws from ½” diameter thru 1-1/2” diameter and manufactures forged headed bolts in other configurations up to 2-1/2” diameter. In addition to our hot-forging capabilities, Portland Bolt operates an in-house hot-dip galvanizing line designed specifically for threaded fasteners.
